General description

Chromobox protein homolog 3, also known as Chromobox protein homolog 3 (HECH), Heterochromatin protein 1 homolog gamma (HP1 gamma), or Modifier 2 protein, and encoded by the gene name CBX3, is implied to be involved in transcriptional silencing in heterochromatin-like complexes. Chromobox protein homolog 3 recognizes and binds histone H3 tails methylated at ′Lys-9′, leading to epigenetic repression. Chromobox protein homolog 3 may contribute to the association of the heterochromatin with the inner nuclear membrane through its interaction with lamin B receptor (LBR). Chromobox protein homolog 3 may also play a role in the formation of functional kinetochore through interaction with MIS12 complex proteins. Chromobox protein homolog 3 binds directly to CHAF1A and it has been shown to interact with LBR, INCENP, TRIM28/TIF1B, SUV420H1, SUV420H2, SP100, MIS12, DSN1, CBX5 via the chromoshadow domain, POGZ, CHAMP1, and ASXL1. Chromobox protein homolog 3 is phosphorylated by PIM1. Recent studies have implied that Chromobox protein homolog 3 is phosphorylated during interphase and possibly hyper-phosphorylated during mitosis.
