일반 설명
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a regulatory protein consisting of 36 amino acids. It is ubiquitously expressed in the heart and brain. NPY is a member of pancreatic polypeptide family. The gene encoding this protein is localized on human chromosome 7p15.
생화학적/생리학적 작용
Endogenous neuropeptide that selectively binds to Y2 and Y5 receptors.
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) plays a vital role in various processes like feeding behavior, anxiety, epilepsy, circadian rhythm, sleep, pain and drug addiction. It also modulates appetite, body weight and obesity. The protein has potent vasoactive effects on the cardiovascular system and controls central endocrine secretion. NPY is involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.

Neuropeptide Y, peptide YY and pancreatic polypeptide share an evolutionary conserved proline-rich N-terminal sequence, a structure generally known to be inert to the attack of common proteinases, but a potential target for specialized proline-specific aminopeptidases. Neuropeptide Y (NPY 1-36) binds to Y1 and Y2 receptors with similar affinity. No endogenous molecular form of NPY with selectivity for Y1 or Y2 receptors has been described so far. We report the presence of an endogenous fragment of
Cloned human neuropeptide Y receptor couples to two different second messenger systems.
