Gene Information

human ... SDC3(9672)

General description

Syndecan 3 (SDC3) also known as neuronal syndecan (N-syndecan), belongs to the transmembrane heparan sulphate proteoglycan family. It is expressed predominantly in brain, and also in ovary, uterus, cartilage, skeletal muscle and pancreatic cells. In human chromosome, the gene SDC3 is localized on 1p35.2.

Immunogen

Synthetic peptide corresponding to residues near the C terminal of human syndecan 3

Application

Anti-SDC3 has been used in western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry studies.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Syndecan 3 (SDC3) maintains cell shape and transfers signals from the cell surface to actin cytoskeleton. It depends on carbohydrate for the process. SDC3 is a potential modulator of gonadal steroid hormone function. SDC3 is a co-receptor for growth factors and extracellular matrix components like basic fibroblast growth factor, heparin binding growth-associated molecule, epidermal growth factor receptor and notch signalling ligands. Thus, SDC3 is involved in various functions like cell adhesion, cell-cell interaction and regulation of ligand-receptor binding. In brain, SDC3 regulates neurite outgrowth and neuronal migration. SDC3 is involved in formation of synapses to maintain homeostasis of feeding behaviour and body weight. SDC3 is one of the potential marker for obesity. Polymorphism is SDC3 leads to obesity and in female obesity is linked with hyperandrogenism. SDC3 binds with tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) in the cell surface of cancer cells. High expression of SDC3 and Pleiotrophin is involved in metastasis and tumor progression in pancreatic cancer. SDC3 expression is regulated by microRNA (miR-144-5p) (passenger strand) and leads to cancer cell aggressiveness in renal cancer.
