Gene Information
human ... CD74(972)
General description
The CD74 (HLA-DR (human leukocyte antigen – antigen D related) antigens-associated invariant chain) gene encodes for a type II transmembrane protein and is expressed by antigen presenting cells such as monocytes, B cells, macrophages and dendritic cells. The CD74 gene is mapped to human chromosome 5q33.1.

Biochem/physiol Actions
CD74 (HLA-DR (human leukocyte antigen – antigen D related) antigens-associated invariant chain) is part of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II and its function is associated with antigen presentation. Upregulation of the CD74 gene is observed cancer including breast cancer and it is known to promote to metastasis. CD74 also serves as a cytokine receptor in immune and epithelial cells. It induces cellular processes such as cell proliferation, migration and survival pathways.
