General description

A non-essential, optically inactive, non-chiral amino acid. It is the smallest of the 20 natural amino acids. Acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, particularly in brain stem and medulla. Shown to block NMDA-stimulated dopamine release in fetal mesencephalic cell cultures. Also reported to increase NMDA-receptor mediated synaptic potential in cortical neurons.
A nonpolar, uncharged amino acid.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Inhibitory neurotransmitter in spinal cord, allosteric regulator of NMDA receptors.
