General description
Guaiacol, a phenolic compound, acts as a scavenger of superoxide radicals. It is produced from guaiacum or wood creosote. Guaiacol acts as a precursor to different favoring agents like, vanillin and roasted coffee. It is used as an antiseptic, analgesic and sedative drug for the treatment of dental pulp and periodontal tissue. Guaiacol enhances cell proliferation in vivo.
Application
Guaiacol has been used:
- as a substrate for peroxidase enzyme to determine its activity
- as a substrate to determine laccase activity
- as a reagent in peroxidase (POD) activity test
Biochem/physiol Actions
Guaiacol has an ability to inhibit prostaglandin biosynthesis, without causing damage to the gastrointestinal system, unlike classic NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Guaiacol, along with 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, is responsible for cork taint in wine. A method has been developed for extraction and quantitation of the two compounds.
Caution
May be liquid at room temperature.
