Sustainability

Our mission “to improve human living conditions” requires us to support sustainability aspects where possible: Eppendorf signed the UN Global Compact and decided to become Carbon-Zero until 2028.

The first steps on this journey are done such as 100% green energy assembly in most of our factories, green cooling for freezers since 2008, ergonomically designed products.

In respect to external product certification, we co-operate with My Green Lab since 2017. The global non-profit organization promotes sustainability in the Life Science Industry through validation of sustainable laboratory products by ACT certification. More and more Eppendorf products are ACT certified, many of them as first of their kind.

Tips & Boxes

Plastic lab waste is one of the core challenges in respect to sustainability in the lab. Due to type and contamination, this waste can not be recycled as normal plastic waste.

The usage of recycling raw material is in discussion although it may still take some time until products made of recycled plastic are available.

An easy-to-fullfill next step to improve is to check if the tip boxes in the lab are already based on refill systems, also known as reloads. Keep in mind, packaging material of tip boxes shall be removed before they get in contact with contaminated lab areas. By this process, you can collect this kind of packaging material like cardboard material and foil with the normal recycling process without any challenge in respect to waste contamination.

Pipettes

Chemical resistance and autoclavability pre-define specific material usage and a specific design of a pipette.

For you as an user and for our environment a longer life time of a pipette is favorable. You may extend the life of your pipetting instrument by regular cleaning and inspection, regular maintenance, and repair and exchange of spare parts instead of new pipette purchases. The precision and accuracy of these instruments are important for the quality of all your work results. Since they are precision instruments with parts subject to normal wear and tear leading to imprecision over the time, only regular maintenance and calibration of pipettes assures a consistent result quality.

Sustainability is not limited to green factors. Keep in mind, ergonomic working conditions are important. Workflows in today’s laboratories get more and more condensed. Air-conditioned rooms, heavy, unwieldy equipment and constantly repetitive movements put strain on the musculoskeletal system. The mental well-being is also negatively affected by high pressure and stress during daily work. An ergonomic design of the pipette itself is the starting point.
